I think the best way to sum up my role this year is analysing campus energy consumption to raise awareness, facilitate tangibility, and give a better picture on options to improve energy performance. Managing energy consumption is to me hugely challenging; with inevitable gaps in data, an ever-growing estate and such a varied mix in end user needs. All things considering the energy team do an incredible job!
I have used the University’s new energy monitoring software to write campus consumption reports, facilitate holiday energy shutdowns, estimate faculty energy use, and assist external energy submissions. But it hasn’t all been energy-related. It has been truly enjoyable helping the team launch Climate Hubs, a new carbon-saving ‘people-network’ in the run up to the Paris international Climate Change talks. Some great projects are getting off the ground, sign up to yammer to save carbon emissions!
I have also helped campus water projects, tender submissions, and had a not-so-successful go attempting to classify birds with the big campus bird watch (my descriptions regressed to entries such as “very small brown bird”…). I would choose my highlight as not a specific project, but working for such a dynamic and bold Sustainability Team! As a soon-to-be final year Environmental Science undergraduate, it was great to see how I can put my degree and ideas into working practice. Thanks guys!
