Sustainability Pop-Up events

Wednesday 22nd March 12:00 – 14:00

This is an ideal opportunity for you to work alongside other volunteers and help spread the dissemination of key sustainability messages to staff, students and members of the public. Pop-ups are held on the last Wednesday of every month in key locations on and off campus.

As well as the monthly pop-up events, volunteers are required to represent the Sustainability Service at the House Hunting Fair to help other students know about the communities they will be moving into, and the Refreshers Fair to promote student involvement with the Sustainability Service. Be Curious Saturday 25th March in the Parkinson Building 10:00 – 16:00.Be Curious Festival 2017 is set to be a great opportunity to celebrate some of the exciting, innovative and meaningful research students and academics are carrying out here at the University that has a direct or indirect influence on Leeds and Yorkshire.

This showcase event is open to all, academics, students and members of the public giving people the opportunity to get involved with interactive stalls and workshops running throughout the day! The Sustainability Service are looking for volunteers to help deliver some of our research at our stalls on the day:

  • Experience of participatory research and engagement,
  • Increased awareness and knowledge of public engagement with activities,
  • Networking

Sewathon: Sustainable Fashion Campaign

From 13th February- hours of commitment flexible

Each year, an estimated £140 million or 350,000 tonnes of our used clothing is sent to landfill in the UK. The Sustainability Service is collaborating with the School of Design and Oxfam to highlight the social and environmental consequences of fast fashion and how we can reduce waste, including to donating and buying from charities such as Oxfam. We are looking for a team of volunteers who are keen to join our project team to develop an effective publicity and awareness campaign and help make students and staff more aware of the issues. Improving  Local Waste Management and Recycling 
February/March- hours of commitment flexible
Working with the Sustainability Service and Leeds City Council, volunteers are needed for a project to improve waste management and recycling rates in Hyde Park. Volunteers will work with Leeds City Council to correctly number and label wheelie bins and engage with students and other residents to encourage better waste management practice. Full training will be provided prior to taking part in this project.

Fairtrade Fortnight

What we are looking for: Maximum 14 volunteers

Time commitment: Volunteer on any of the 5 days (27th of February, 2nd, 7th, 9th and 10th of March). Work for 3 hours on the day between 11:30 – 2:30.

Volunteers will be working on a stall that is helping to raise awareness of Fairtrade issues and Fairtrade products at the University. Tasks will include:

  • Organising the stall at the event with the intent to raise awareness
  • Making Fairtrade smoothies on some days
  • Sampling new Fairtrade products
  • Engaging people to take part in a short quiz on their awareness of Fairtrade at the University (prizes available)
  • Wearing a banana suit (if they want)!

Hyde Park Source

 Time commitment: 5-10 hours a week for a month (but this can be flexible)

Hyde Park Source have been working with local communities for over 15 years to improve their surroundings, designing and creating attractive, exciting, safe and useful places for people to live, work and play. This project involves planning and delivering a one-off publicity campaign for a competition that Hyde Park Source are finalists in.
