A team of 21 volunteers spent last Wednesday afternoon clearing 17 bags of litter from Woodhouse Moor and the surrounding streets.

The litter pick event was organised by the University of Leeds Sustainability service as part of the University’s Fresh Start Festival. It was the first of a series of monthly litter picks aimed at improving the environment for both people and wildlife, contributing to the local community and meeting new like-minded people.

The event was followed by a social and refreshments at local café Coffee on the Crescent.

Student team member Valentina Oporto Aguilera said “I got involved in the litter picking because I thought it was a very good way of exploring the city, whilst doing something that contributed to the community”.

Another participant, Burak Ozdemir, added "I am very happy to be a part of such a meaningful project and to meet people who are sensitive to the environment. Thank you to everyone who contributed".

The next litter pick event will take place on Wednesday 9th February from 1.30-3pm as part of Student Volunteering week. Students, staff and local residents are all welcome to take part.  All equipment is provided and there will be the opportunity to socialise with the other volunteers at a local café after the event.

To take part in the February event please sign up via Eventbrite.
