Sustainable travel

Travel is essential to the everyday activities of the University’s staff and students, as well as connecting local research with the global academic community.

However, transporting thousands of people to and from the university inevitably contributes to total carbon emissions, puts pressure on transport networks and local communities, and impacts air quality and noise levels.

Our environmentally and socially responsible approach to travel

The University’s sustainable travel plan will help us achieve our strategic travel aims and work towards embedding sustainability across the University; maximizing the potential to address local and global challenges to help achieve UN Sustainable Development Goals. This travel plan will help us to achieve our strategic aim to foster a student and staff body where sustainable travel is the norm enhancing the connectivity of our institution while reducing the associated negative impacts of travel such as congestion, carbon emissions and air pollution.

It is the responsibility of the entire University community to push forward and help deliver our sustainable travel commitments.

Climate Plan principle: achieving sustainable travel

The achieving sustainable travel principle of our Climate Plan sets out ambitions to reduce travel emissions.

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

We use the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a framework to guide our activity. Our sustainable travel work supports most of the SDGs, in particular:

Goal 3: Good health and well-being; Goal 9: Industry, innovation and infrastructure; Goal 11: Sustainable cities and communities; Goal 13: Climate action; Goal 17: Partnerships for the goals
