The University of Leeds Sustainability Service is launching neighbourhood walking tours, a pilot initiative within the Student Citizenship Programme, and we are looking for students to test out the tours.  These guided tours are intended to deepen students' understanding and appreciation of local history, cultural diversity, and community opportunities available to them.

The neighbourhood tours have been developed by 2025 Student Sustainability Architects, Htar Yu Nwe and Brianna Haughian, under the supervision of Ayesha Fitzwilliam Hall. We have developed them by researching  existing local tours, analysing of student feedback surveys, and collaborating with key community stakeholders.

Why are we running tours?

The tours are one of the many initiatives of the student citizenship program, which focuses on creating a positive experience for students within their local communities. The programme educates students on their local impact and encourages active and positive community participation.

Recognising that transient student lifestyles can sometimes result in isolation or negative behaviours, the programme aims to address these challenges directly. Neighbourhood walking tours are central to this commitment in increasing student’s connections and sense of belonging with the local communities and appreciation of the local culture and history.

We want your help!

The Student Citizenship programme is seeking 15 volunteers to attend and share feedback on the first pilot Neighbourhood Tour of the Woodhouse area on Saturday 3 May 2025 1pm to 3pm. will get the chance to develop a deeper connection to the Woodhouse area by learning about the history of local landmarks and hidden gems.

At the end of the tour, we would like to gather your thoughts and views on how we can make the tours great for future students.  This will be done in a local venue in a group setting. In return for your feedback, we are offering a free drink at the venue and a £15 Hyde Park Picture House voucher sent to you afterwards.
