Energy and net zero

Creating a low-carbon campus for the future

The University of Leeds is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating a resilient, low carbon campus that supports our journey to Net Zero. Through ongoing investment in buildings, infrastructure and energy systems, we are transforming how our campus consumes and generates energy by combining energy efficiency measures, low carbon technologies, renewable energy generation and smarter estate management. We are continually improving building performance, reducing energy demand and exploring innovative solutions that support a more sustainable future. As a large and complex campus, we recognise our responsibility in tackling climate change and are using the campus as a living environment to trial new technologies and approaches, helping to accelerate progress, support research and learning, and share valuable insights with partners beyond the University.

Driving Energy Efficiency Across Campus

Behind the scenes, the University's Energy Team plays a vital role in delivering our Net Zero and energy efficient ambitions. Working across more than 300 buildings, the team manages energy performance, monitors consumption, delivers energy saving projects and identifies opportunities to reduce carbon emissions across the estate. From improving the efficiency of our buildings and infrastructure to supporting the transition to low carbon technologies, their work helps reduce energy use while ensuring our campus remains a safe, comfortable and effective place to study, work and conduct research. Working closely with the Sustainability Service and other teams across the University, the Energy Team is helping to turn our Climate Plan and Framework for Environmental and Social Responsibility into practical action, delivering projects that reduce environmental impact today while preparing our campus for a more sustainable future.
