Climate Week 2026

Climate Week 2026 brings staff and students together for a week of inspiring events, practical workshops and everyday actions that support our shared commitment to climate and sustainability. Throughout the week, you’ll discover how your choices on campus and beyond can make a difference and how the University’s Climate Plan is turning ambition into action.

Climate Week is open to all staff and students, whatever your role, discipline or level of experience.

You don’t need to be a sustainability expert, just curious and willing to get involved.

Whether you have five minutes or a full afternoon, there’s something for everyone.

What's On

Expect a mix of in-person and online activities across the week, including:

  • Get involved and be in with a chance to win a bike or bus pass! There will be a prize for one student and one member of staff!
  • Practical workshops focused on everyday sustainable actions – topics will include AI & Sustainability and safer travel for women.

From Monday 2 March to Sunday 8 March, all staff & students at the University of Leeds will have the opportunity to win one of two prizes by completing our sustainability and climate focused challenges! The prizes available are:

  • A bike
  • A First Bus pass

Climate Week Showcase

This your opportunity to find out about what teams across the University are doing to support the Climate Plan and sustainability at Leeds. There will be plenty on offer to both staff and students with activities to join in with and prizes to be won.

Join us at the showcase to in with a chance of winning a bike or bus pass (both staff and students).

  • Geosolutions Leeds (Tuesday only) - Discover how we're using interdisciplinary subsurface research to aid the delivery of the University's net-zero and Climate Plan goals

  • Conferencing and Events - Explore practical ways to make your events more sustainable, supported by insights and a living lab conference case study.

From local to global, we ensure that climate action is informed by the latest research, collaborating with organisations and individuals to transform our expertise into real-world impact.
  • Global Opportunities (Thursday only) - Discover the offer across Global Opportunities, focusing on sustainable employability and leadership opportunities for students. Also information on Summer Schools, Study Abroad, Volunteering, Employer Engagement and Careers.

We want to know how the Climate Plan affects you and anything else we could/should be doing. And we want to hear what’s important to you so we can ensure your concerns and priorities are considered while the university is delivering its Climate Plan. And, most importantly, we want to give you a way to engage with, shape and influence the work of the taskforce and the university’s climate action.

AI and Sustainability Workshop

It has become increasingly clear that AI raises significant sustainability concerns, including around water and energy use. At the same time, significant efficiency gains are claimed to dramatically reduce the impact of at least some use cases, and it may be that AI can meaningfully assist us in sustainability work. This workshop will explore the complicated situation around AI and sustainability, with a focus on discussion and identifying practical actions we can take, featuring speakers John Palfreyman from University of Leeds and Martin Callaghan from The Open University


Priestley Impact Seminar – UK Adaptation & Resilience

In this workshop we will explore the intersections of transport, climate, and women's health. Using Leeds as a case study we will work together to understand some of the barriers facing women when it comes to travelling sustainably, as well as some of the current gender inequities that are embedded in a system that's no longer fit for purpose. We will co-create possible solutions to be presented to senior decision-makers.

Friday 6th March

NEW: Volunteer at Gair Wood: Help Grow a New Woodland in Leeds

Spend a couple of hours helping to establish a new native broadleaf woodland at Gair Wood in Leeds. This young woodland aims to boost local biodiversity, provide a community asset, and further research at the University of Leeds. Is also contributes to the University’s climate plan by supporting carbon capture.

To ensure Gair Wood continues to grow into a healthy, mature woodland, year‑round care is vital. These volunteer sessions will give you the chance to directly support its long‑term success. We'll be running dead hedging sessions in the morning (10.30 - 12.30) and focussing on tree protection in the afternoon (1.30 - 3.30). Tickets for this event will be live on Eventbrite at the start of climate week, or you can visit our stall at the Climate Week Showcase on Tuesday and sign up there.
