The Sustainability service will be involved in lots of events during LUU's Climate Week, and you're all invited to join us!

Climate Week 2022 takes place from Monday 21st to Friday 25th March at Leeds University Union.  It focuses on themes of climate justice, climate education and eco-anxiety, and is a great opportunity to learn, reflect and take action on climate change.

The climate crisis is the greatest challenge we face and as a University we've committed to taking action - the University of Leeds Climate Plan was approved in November 2021 and sets out the University's climate commitments and - importantly - how we will achieve them across our seven climate principles.  These include delivering net zero by 2030, providing a sustainable curriculum and achieving sustainable travel.

The University has committed £174m to delivering our Climate Plan, and work on bringing this to life has already begun, but its success requires the whole University community to come together and collaborate on its delivery.  That's why we're excited to be involved in a range of events throughout Climate Week, including those that help with the move towards more sustainable consumption, improving our local environment, and helping students develop careers in sustainability.

You can find details of these events below and at the LUU Engage website, and we'd love to see you there!

Tuesday 22th March

Swap Shop x Repair Café at Riley Smith Theatre, 10am - 3pm

Got a hole in your jumper? Found a perfect pair of trousers in a charity shop, but they're too big? Repair Café is a space that favours fixing items over letting them go to waste.

On Tuesday you can bring in clothes that need altering or fixing, and together with the Repair Café volunteers you'll get a chance to give your clothes a new lease of life. If you don't know how to sew a stitch then don't worry! We'll teach you the basics, so in future you'll be able to fix your items yourself.

You'll also be able to swap your unwanted clothes with other students at the Swap Shop brought to you by anti-fast fashion campaign News to Reuse, and pick up some new second hand items from Hazaar market.

Find out more about Swap Shop x Repair Café here.

Curious about how you can support circular economy model here in Leeds? Would you like to learn how reuse some old materials to create your own vegetable/ fruit bags?

During this workshop you'll learn from experts about the circular economy, explain how it works and introduce you to key projects taking place in Leeds such as the Library of Things, Repair Café and Yorkshire Circular Lab. We will teach you how to spot greenwashing, how to make more sustainable choices and finally, we will be helping you sew vegetable bags that you can take with you to refill stores and greengrocers!

We will provide materials, but you can also bring along your own materials such as an old cotton t-shirt.

LUU and the University of Leeds are coming together to host the Careers in Sustainability Fair in Union Square on the Thursday of Climate Week.

The Careers in Sustainability Fair will highlight to our students the broad range of roles and opportunities available to them in the sustainability field allowing them to explore well-known avenues such as consultancy but also looking beyond this. We want to encourage students from a range of disciplines to enter the field, demonstrating that any degree has transferable skills to enter the sustainability field.

Come along to the fair to meet employers in person who are recruiting for sustainability roles right now, including KPMG, Savills and Johnson Matthey, as well as for a workshop where you can get top tips on finding and securing jobs and placements in sustainability.
