We are delighted that the University of Leeds has retained our Fairtrade University award, after being audited for the 22/23 and 23/24 academic years.

Our two-star status recognises the broad range of activities undertaken within the University, including raising awareness and increasing availability of Fairtrade products in the university, further supporting work towards a more just, equal and sustainable world for all. The award was achieved through a partnership between the University of Leeds and Leeds University Union.

What is the award and why is it important?

The Fairtrade award is jointly delivered by the Fairtrade Foundation and Students Organising for Sustainability (SOS-UK), and acknowledges institutions that have embedded ethical and sustainable practices through their curriculum, procurement, research and campaigns.

Participating in the Fairtrade University and College Award helps to direct the University’s work on Fairtrade, providing guidance and support on how we could further our efforts, as well as auditing the work we already do.

What is Fairtrade and how can you get involved?

Fairtrade targets the injustices of conventional trade which has typically discriminated against the producers in developing countries, promoting better prices, better working conditions, and more sustainable practices, to make trade fair.

The easiest way everyone can get involved is to buy Fairtrade products; Fairtrade products are widely available in local supermarkets, especially for products such as fruit and vegetables, tea and coffee, nuts and grains, and chocolate.

Fairtrade Fortnight 2024 is also just around the corner, running from the 9th-24th September celebrating 30 years of Fairtrade, so look out for ways that you can get involved with our campaign at the University or in your local area!
