We’ve teamed up with Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking, and West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s CityConnect project to challenge you to get active.

Across the next four weeks we will be setting a weekly walking challenge to complete, to encourage you to build walking into your daily activities. Are you up for it?

Walking can boost morale, wellbeing and health, as well as having a positive impact on the environment, but just 10% of us walk to work in the UK.  It's a rate that Walking Works aims to increase, by embedding the culture of walking in workspaces across the country. Here in Leeds we’re lucky to have a compact and easily walkable city, as well as lots of great spaces to explore both on campus and in the local area, so it's a great place to get walking.

By gradually incorporating sustainable practices into a daily routine, you may soon find yourself having a team meeting outside or walking together with your housemates to the campus. It not only brings people together, but also has positive impacts on the workspace and individuals' health.

The challenge!

Over the next four weeks we challenge you to add more walking into your daily routine. We will be posting a new walking challenge each Monday for you to complete - so watch this space and our social channels (links below) for more details.

Sign up to Walking Works and make your pledge to walk more, and you'll also have the opportunity to win a £400 LoveToShop voucher.  Or of course you can just join in each week!

Walk Champions

Would you like to help your colleagues get active?  Are you the go-to person for people to find out where is a nice place to go for a lunchtime walk? Walking Works are offering a number of employees the opportunity to become trained as Walk Champions, giving you the tools to support colleagues in safely increasing their workday walking.

As a Walk Champion you will learn how to:

  • Think about and explain why walking is important for colleagues
  • Encourage your colleagues to fit more walking into their everyday routine
  • Promote, publicise and signpost colleagues to Walking Works activities
  • Celebrate your colleagues' walking achievements

Sign up here to attend one of the online Walk Champion Training sessions.

Fancy going a bit further afield?

The University's Get Out, Get Active team run weekend walking trips to explore some of the fantastic countryside around Leeds. You could find yourself walking in the Lake District, Ilkley Moor and the South Pennines. Check out what’s on and book your space here.
