Volunteering

A group of volunteers sat under a tree at Brudenell Primary School.

Volunteering is a great way to build your skills, make a positive impact and have fun while doing it! By volunteering with the Sustainability Service you'll meet and work with other students and staff committed to making positive changes on campus and beyond.

Current volunteering opportunities:

Fix things at the Repair Café

A blackboard with the words 'Repair Cafe' written on

Are you skilled in either textiles, electrical/electronic engineering, carpentry or general handy work?

We have launched a new Repair Café at Makerspace in the Edward Boyle Library, and we're looking for volunteers with repair skills to help students and staff to fix their stuff and save valuable resources from landfill.  Users of the Café will have access to the equipment at Makerspace including laser cutter, 3D printer, CAD software, high-spec sewing machine and overlocker, soldering stations and a range of hand tools.

The Café will take place monthly on a weekday afternoon with the day of week changing to allow as many people as possible to attend.

Check our events page for the next Repair Cafe date. To get more information, please email C.Bowie@Leeds.ac.uk

Two people doing a litter pick in Hyde Park

Join the Sustainability Service for a litter pick of the local area!

Our community litter picks take place monthly within the Hyde Park area to support everyone who wants to do their bit to create a better environment for people and wildlife. It also gives you the chance to meet new people who are also interested in making their community a better place.

Check our events page for our next litter pick date. Refreshments provided at Hyde Park Book Club afterwards!

Campus gardening sessions

Four people are in the University of Leeds Sustainable Garden doing some gardening.

Join us for our weekly Campus Gardening Sessions, where we come together to nurture the Sustainable Garden at the University of Leeds. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or a complete novice, these sessions are a perfect opportunity to get outdoors, connect with nature, and contribute to the University's commitment to biodiversity and sustainability.

From planting and weeding to learning about sustainable gardening practices, there's always something to do. We’ve teaming up with Incredible Edible Meanwood to share her knowledge and guide you through. Plus, it's a great way to meet like-minded individuals and enjoy a peaceful break in the middle of your week.

Go to our events page to find out when our next session is. Bear in mind we do not run these sessions over the winter.

Volunteer as a mechanic at the Bike Hub

A sign that reads "Bike Hub"

We are always looking for Bike Hub volunteers to support our team during opening hours by engaging with our visitors and assisting with the maintenance of their bikes

The Bike Hub is open to the public, offering cycle maintenance, access to tools, cycling advice and sale of spare parts/cycle accessories. We also offer bike hires for University of Leeds and Leeds Beckett University staff and students. We show people how to repair and maintain their own bikes to encourage a “repair it” rather than “replace it” mentality, which is more sustainable and affordable!

Under the supervision of our trained cycle mechanics, our volunteers work on adjusting gears, adjusting brakes, fixing punctures and lubrication of parts on our visitors bikes. More complex issues may require one of Bike Hub’s trained cycle mechanics to take over, but we will involve you in the process to develop more advanced cycle mechanic skills.

For more information please email bikehub@leeds.ac.uk.
